This installation covers a new UHF digital TV antenna at a home in Dolphin Sands, mounted on a wide tripod base on the roof.
Why UHF on the East Coast
Most of Southern Tasmania receives TV on VHF, which is why so many of our installation posts feature VHF antennas. Parts of the East Coast are different. Around Swansea, Dolphin Sands, Orford and Spring Beach, UHF services are more common, so the antenna has to match the signal that actually reaches the property. Fitting the wrong type, or a generic combination antenna that does neither job well, is one of the most common reasons for pixelating pictures and missing channels in this area.
Dolphin Sands also sits on a long, exposed spit with Great Oyster Bay on one side. There’s nothing to break the wind, so height and stability both matter.
What we did
We installed a long, high gain UHF antenna on a galvanised tripod mount, with three legs spread wide across the roof to give the mast a stable footprint. The tripod gives the antenna enough height to clear the roofline, while staying rigid in strong winds. The antenna was aimed using a signal meter rather than by eye, then fixed in place once we had the strongest, cleanest reading.
The cable was clipped neatly down the mast and run into the house, and every connection was checked and weatherproofed.
On a coastal roof like this, we also make sure the cable has a drip loop before it enters the connector, so rain runs off the cable rather than into the fitting. It’s a small detail that prevents a lot of reception faults down the track.
The result
Clear, stable free-to-air TV on all available channels, from an antenna that is set up for the local signal and built for the exposed conditions out on the spit.
