Why VHF is the right choice here
Across most of Southern Tasmania, free-to-air TV is broadcast on VHF frequencies, which is why VHF antennas make up the bulk of our work in suburbs like Lindisfarne. A lot of homes still have older antennas that were never designed for the current digital signal, or a UHF antenna fitted by mistake. Either way, the result is the same: pixelating pictures, channels dropping out in bad weather, and some stations missing altogether.
Lindisfarne’s hilly streets and tall gums add to it. A small change in height or position on the roof can make a real difference to signal strength.
What we did
We fitted a VHF antenna on a galvanised mast with a stay for stability, mounted on a roof bracket fixed through the sheeting into the framing. The extra height gets the antenna up above the surrounding trees for a cleaner line towards the transmitter. We aligned it with a signal meter, checking the strength and quality of each service rather than just pointing it in the general direction, then locked it in place.
The coaxial cable was run neatly down the mast and into the roof space, and the connections were checked and sealed against moisture.
If a home has several TVs, the signal also has to be split between outlets. Each split reduces the signal a little, so a strong, clean feed from the antenna gives the whole system more headroom.
The result
Clear, stable free-to-air reception on every available channel, from an antenna set up for the signal that actually reaches this part of the eastern shore.
