This installation in Geeveston combined a Starlink satellite internet system with a point to point wireless link and a meshed WiFi network, so the connection reaches more than just the main house.
Getting internet beyond the house
On a lot of rural properties the internet stops at the back door. A shed, a studio, a granny flat or a second dwelling might only be 50 or 100 metres away, but that’s well beyond what a standard router can reach, and digging a trench for a data cable isn’t always practical. A point to point link solves this. Two directional radio units are pointed at each other and pass the connection through the air between buildings, as if they were joined by a cable.
Once the connection reaches the second building, a mesh WiFi system spreads it around the inside so there are no dead spots.

What we did
The Starlink dish was mounted on a galvanised pole on the main roof, with an angled brace for stability. On a separate mast beside the solar panels, we fitted the point to point radio units, aimed and aligned to the receiving building. The data cables were neatly clipped down the mast and run to the network equipment inside. From there, the mesh WiFi nodes were set up to cover the buildings that needed it.
We tested the link speed between the buildings and checked the Starlink connection before we left.
A point to point link is also handy for CCTV. Cameras on a shed or a gate can send their footage back to a recorder in the house over the same wireless link, without any cable in the ground.

The result
Fast, reliable internet across the property, not just in the main house, from one Starlink service.
