This installation covers a VHF digital TV antenna on a tall mast at a home in Richmond, in the Coal River Valley.
Why height matters in Richmond
Richmond sits low in the Coal River Valley, with hills on several sides and plenty of established trees through the township. For TV reception, that can mean the signal reaching rooftop height is weaker or less consistent than you’d expect for somewhere so close to Hobart. Getting the antenna higher is often the simplest fix, lifting it above the trees and roofline so it has a cleaner path to the transmitter.
On older homes, the roof structure doesn’t always suit a tall mast, so the mounting needs some thought.

What we did
We installed a VHF antenna on a tall galvanised mast fixed alongside the chimney, with a stay running back to the roof to keep it rigid in the wind. This gave the antenna the height it needed without putting heavy loads on the roof sheeting. The antenna was aligned with a signal meter, checking each channel’s strength and quality, and locked off once we had the best result.
The coaxial cable was clipped neatly down the mast and run into the house, with all connections checked and weatherproofed.
Richmond also has many older homes with heritage character, so we keep installations as neat as possible. A straight, well supported mast with tidy cabling looks far better than a leaning antenna with cable hanging off it.
The result
Clear, stable free-to-air TV on all channels, from an antenna mounted high enough to rise above the trees and the valley.
