This job was a compact VHF digital TV antenna installed low on the roof of a home in Brighton, north of Hobart.
Bigger isn’t always better
A common assumption is that a bigger antenna on a taller mast always gives better reception. In strong signal areas, that isn’t the case. An oversized antenna can overload the TV tuner with too much signal, which causes pixelation just like a weak signal does. It also adds wind loading and stands out on the roofline for no real benefit.
Brighton has good line of sight to the transmitter from many streets, so the right antenna here is often smaller and lower than people expect. The only way to know for sure is to measure the signal at the property.

What we did
After testing the signal on the roof, we installed a compact VHF antenna on a low, heavy duty roof bracket, fixed through the roofing into the framing. Keeping it low reduces wind loading and keeps the installation tidy from the street. The antenna was aligned with a signal meter, checking strength and quality on each channel to make sure the tuner was getting a clean signal rather than too much of it.
The coaxial cable was run into the roof space and every connection was checked and sealed against moisture.
A smaller antenna also has fewer parts exposed to the weather, so there’s less to work loose over time. In a strong signal area, it’s often the most reliable option as well as the neatest.
The result
Clear, reliable free-to-air TV on every channel, from a neat, low profile antenna sized properly for the signal in the area.
