This installation covers a Starlink satellite internet system at a home in Sandfly, set among the bush in the hills south of Hobart.
Starlink and tree cover
Sandfly is heavily treed, and that’s the biggest consideration for any Starlink installation in the area. The dish needs a clear view of a large part of the sky to keep a steady connection with the satellites as they pass overhead. Tall gums close to the house can block parts of that view, causing the connection to drop out briefly through the day. It often looks fine at first, then becomes frustrating during video calls or streaming.
Choosing the right part of the roof, and getting the dish up off the roof surface, avoids most of those problems without the need for a tall mast.

What we did
We fitted the dish on a cranked galvanised pole, which lifts it up and away from the roof, with a long brace fixed back across the corrugations to keep it steady in the wind. The mount was positioned on the side of the roof with the most open view of the sky, away from the closest trees. The base and brace were fixed through the roofing into the framing, and all penetrations were sealed.
After the dish connected, we checked the obstruction map in the Starlink app and confirmed it had a clean view before we left.
Trees also keep growing. When we choose a dish position, we allow for some extra growth in the canopy nearby, so the connection doesn’t slowly get worse over the next few years as the branches fill in.
The result
A tidy, secure Starlink installation giving the household fast, reliable internet, even with the bush right on the doorstep.
