This job was a new VHF digital TV antenna installation at a rural home in Orielton, just north of Sorell.
Reception in the Coal River and Pittwater area
Orielton sits in open farmland between Sorell and Richmond, close to our home base. Signal strength across this area varies more than you might think, depending on the lie of the land and how far a property is from the nearest transmitter or translator. Properties on lower ground, or behind a hill, often need a higher gain antenna to pull in a clean, consistent signal.
Getting the antenna type and size right for the actual signal at the house is what separates a reliable picture from one that drops out every time the weather turns.
What we did
We installed a high gain VHF antenna on a heavy duty roof bracket, fixed through the corrugated roofing into the framing near the ridge. The longer boom and additional elements give the antenna more gain, which suits a rural property further from the transmitter. The antenna was aligned with a signal meter, checking the strength and quality of every channel before it was locked in place.
The coaxial cable was run neatly into the roof space, and all connections were checked and sealed to keep moisture out.
Being close to our base in Sorell, we know the reception quirks around Orielton and Pittwater well. That local knowledge helps us choose the right antenna before we even get the ladder off the van.
The result
Clear, dependable free-to-air TV on every channel, from an antenna properly matched to the signal at the property.
