This job was a Starlink satellite internet installation in Dodges Ferry, with the dish raised on a tall pole to clear the gum trees around the house.
When the trees are taller than the roof
A lot of Dodges Ferry homes sit among tall coastal gums, and that’s lovely until you try to get a clear view of the sky. A Starlink dish at roof height on a property like this can be blocked for part of every hour, causing short dropouts that make video calls and streaming frustrating.
Trimming or removing trees isn’t always possible or wanted, so the usual fix is to take the dish up higher.
What we did
We installed a tall cranked galvanised pole fixed through the roofing into the framing, with a brace along the roof and stay wires running back to keep the top rigid. The extra height lifts the dish up above most of the surrounding canopy and gives it a far wider view of the sky. All the fixings went into the structure rather than relying on the roof sheeting alone, and the penetrations were sealed.
The cable was tied neatly down the pole and run along the roof to the entry point. Once powered up, we checked the obstruction map in the Starlink app and confirmed the dish was seeing over the trees.
A tall pole like this also needs to be secured properly. Stays and braces stop it swaying in strong wind, which protects both the dish’s connection and the roof fixings at the base.
The result
A steady Starlink connection on a property surrounded by tall trees, without having to touch the trees themselves.
