Reception headaches in the hills of North Hobart
North Hobart is one of those suburbs where the view is the whole point, tucked into the hillside with rooflines stepping down toward the city and kunanyi/Mount Wellington behind. That same terrain is exactly what causes reception trouble. Established homes packed close together, two storey neighbours and mature trees all sit between a low mounted antenna and a clean signal path, and this property was no exception. The old antenna, mounted close to the roofline, was picking up just enough interference from the surrounding rooftops and trees to make the picture unreliable.
Why height was the answer, not just a new antenna
Swapping in a new antenna alone wouldn’t have fixed this one. The real problem was line of sight, so the fix needed to get the antenna up and clear of everything around it rather than just improve the antenna itself.
Building a mast tall enough to clear the ridge line
We installed a freestanding tripod mast, guyed and braced for stability, extending the antenna well above the ridge of the corrugated roof. That extra height was enough to clear the neighbouring rooflines and the tree canopy nearby, giving the antenna an unobstructed path across the valley toward the transmitter rather than fighting its way through everything in between.

A clear, stable digital picture across every free to air channel, with a mast and antenna solid enough to handle the wind that comes with sitting up above the roofline on a hillside property like this one.
