Slow copper a long way from the exchange
Molesworth sits well up the Derwent Valley past New Norfolk, in a stretch where the properties are spread out and the copper network has a long way to travel to reach them. This property had a working phone line, but the ADSL running over it barely qualified as broadband, crawling along at a fraction of what the plan promised simply because of the distance the signal had to travel down the copper. With a small business run from home and more of the household working online day to day, that kind of connection had gone from a mild annoyance to a genuine bottleneck.
Why Starlink made more sense than waiting on copper
There was no realistic upgrade coming for the copper running this far up the valley, and running new cable or fibre out this distance was never going to stack up for one property. Starlink sidesteps that problem entirely, connecting straight to satellites overhead rather than depending on ageing infrastructure that was always going to be a weak link this far from town.

A straightforward tile roof mount
Unlike a lot of the bush blocks we work on, this property had a clear, open view of the sky straight off the roof, with no tree canopy or ridge line to climb above. That meant a simple pole bracket, mounted directly into the terracotta tile roof and positioned clear of the chimney, was all that was needed rather than a freestanding mast. The fixing was flashed properly around the tile bed to keep the roof watertight, and the cable run tucked in neatly alongside the existing roof penetrations.
The result
A fast, stable connection that has nothing to do with how far the copper runs from the exchange, plus a data port run through into the study so the home office is wired in directly rather than relying on WiFi alone.
If you’re in the Derwent Valley
Properties further up the Derwent Valley, around Molesworth, Plenty, Bushy Park and Glenora, often deal with the same issue: technically connected, but too far from the exchange for the copper to ever perform properly. If your home business or household is stuck on a slow ADSL connection, Starlink is usually a faster and more reliable fix than waiting on an upgrade that may never come.
