This job in Triabunna combined a Starlink Mini satellite internet system with an 8 camera CCTV security system, so the owners can check in on the property from anywhere.
Security cameras need a connection
A CCTV system records locally, but most people also want to see the cameras on their phone when they’re away. That needs a reliable internet connection at the property. On the East Coast, where fixed line options can be limited and mobile coverage varies, that connection is often the weak link. Without it, you only find out something has happened when you next get back and check the recorder.
Pairing the cameras with Starlink solves that. The Starlink Mini is a compact dish that is well suited to smaller connections like this.
What we did
We fitted the Starlink Mini on a galvanised pole mount near the roof edge, with a long brace running back across the corrugations for stability. Two of the cameras were mounted on the same bracket, which kept the number of roof fixings down and gave them a high, wide view over the yard. The remaining cameras were placed around the property to cover the entry points and outdoor areas.
All the cabling was run neatly to the recorder, which was set up on the network. We then configured the phone app, checked every camera’s view and confirmed remote viewing worked over the Starlink connection.
Running cameras over Starlink also means footage alerts can come through to a phone in real time. If a camera picks up movement after hours, the owners can see what’s happening straight away rather than finding out later.
The result
Eight cameras covering the property, recorded locally and viewable from a phone, on a satellite connection that doesn’t rely on patchy local coverage.
