This job was a Starlink satellite internet installation at a hillside home in Berridale, in Hobart’s northern suburbs.
Starlink in the suburbs
Starlink is usually thought of as a rural option, but we install plenty of systems in suburban Hobart too. Some households want a backup to their NBN connection, some work from home and want a second, independent connection, and some simply have a poor fixed line service on their street. Whatever the reason, the installation principles are the same: a clear view of the sky and a mount that won’t move.
On a hillside block like this one, wind exposure is the main thing to plan for.
What we did
We fitted the Starlink dish on a cranked galvanised pole, which raises it up and away from the roof surface, with a long brace running down the roof and fixed across the corrugations. The brace takes the load off the base and stops the dish rocking in strong gusts, which matters on an exposed slope. The base and brace were fixed through the roofing into the framing, and the penetrations were sealed.
The cable was run neatly along the roof and into the house. Once the dish was online, we checked the obstruction readout in the app to confirm the view was clear.
A hillside position like this also has its advantages. Being up the slope gives the dish a wide, open view of the sky over the suburb below, which helps it hold a strong, steady connection.
The result
A secure, neat Starlink installation giving the household fast and reliable internet, independent of the local fixed line network.
