Dover sits at the southern end of the Huon Highway, and the further south you go past Geeveston, the thinner the NBN options get. This property is perched high on a hill above the township with a sweeping view down over the valley, but that same distance from town had left it relying on old-generation satellite broadband, the kind that gets the job done but with enough lag to make video calls and anything real-time genuinely frustrating.
Why Starlink was the obvious upgrade
Older satellite internet bounces the signal off satellites sitting far out in geostationary orbit, which is where most of that lag comes from. Starlink uses satellites in a much lower orbit, cutting the round trip dramatically and lifting speeds well beyond what the old service could manage, without waiting on any new towers ever reaching this far down the highway.
A straightforward mount with the view already on side
Perched high above Dover with an open outlook over the town and the valley below, this roof already had a clear, unobstructed line of sight to the sky. Rather than fighting for height like a lot of the bush block jobs further north, it was a case of anchoring a stable tripod mast to the colorbond roof, guyed and braced to handle the wind that comes with sitting this high above the valley.
