This job was a Starlink satellite internet installation at a rural home in Ellendale, in the upper Derwent Valley.
Rural internet in the Derwent Valley
Ellendale is a long way from the nearest exchange, and like a lot of the upper Derwent Valley, it has limited fixed line options. Mobile signal can be patchy too, especially in the gullies and once you’re inside a house. For a rural household, that can mean slow downloads, video calls that freeze and streaming that buffers through every show.
Starlink changes that because it doesn’t rely on anything nearby. The dish connects directly to satellites in low earth orbit, so as long as it has a clear view of the sky, the connection is just as good on a farm as it is in town.

What we did
We mounted the dish on a cranked galvanised pole, with a long brace running across the roof to keep it steady in the wind. The cranked pole lifts the dish clear of the roof surface and gives it a better view over the trees and outbuildings on the property. The base and brace were fixed through the corrugated iron into the framing, and the roof penetrations were sealed.
The cable was run neatly down the pole and into the house. Once it was online, we checked the obstruction map in the app and tested the speed.
Starlink also handles several devices at once far better than a weak mobile connection does. That means one person can be on a video call while someone else is streaming, without either of them grinding to a halt.
The result
Fast, reliable internet for a rural home, installed neatly and built to last.
