This installation covers a Starlink satellite internet system at a home in Grove, in the Huon Valley, fitted on a cranked pole mount with a long brace.
Why the dish position matters
A Starlink dish is constantly tracking satellites as they cross the sky, so it needs an open view in most directions, with the north being the most important in Tasmania. When it’s mounted too low on the roof, trees, the roof ridge, a neighbour’s house or even a chimney can block part of that view. You won’t notice it straight away, but you’ll see the effect as short dropouts during video calls or streaming.
Getting the dish up and slightly away from the roof surface usually fixes it, without the need for a tall mast.

What we did
We used a cranked galvanised pole, which has an offset bend that lifts the dish up and out from its base. The base was fixed through the corrugated iron into the roof framing, and a long brace was run back down the roof slope and fixed across the corrugations to keep everything rigid in the wind. This setup gives the dish a clear view over the roofline while keeping the installation low profile and neat from the street.
The cable was tied down the pole and run along the roof to a sealed entry point. Once powered up, we checked the obstruction readout in the app before we left.
The neat finish matters too. With the cranked pole and brace, the dish sits close to the roof rather than towering over it, so it doesn’t dominate the house from the street.
The result
A tidy, secure Starlink install with a clear view of the sky, giving the household fast, consistent internet.
