This job was a Starlink satellite internet installation at a home in Huonville, mounted on a braced pole on the roof looking out over the Huon Valley.
Why Starlink works so well in the Huon
The Huon Valley is beautiful country, but the hills and steep valley sides are hard on traditional internet and mobile signal. Plenty of properties around Huonville and further down the valley have patchy fixed line options and mobile coverage that drops out as soon as you’re inside. Starlink gets around that by talking to satellites overhead instead of a tower on a distant hill.
The catch is that the dish needs a clear view of a large part of the sky. In a valley with tall gums around the house, choosing the right spot on the roof makes all the difference between a solid connection and one that drops out several times an hour.
What we did
We picked a spot high on the roof with an open view to the north and over the valley, away from the tree line behind the house. The dish was fitted on a galvanised pole mount, bolted through the corrugated iron into the framing, with two angled braces to keep it rigid in the wind. The cabling runs down the pole and along the roof to a sealed entry point.
After it powered up, we checked the obstruction map in the Starlink app to confirm the trees behind the house weren’t getting in the way.
Where the house WiFi needs to reach further, such as a shed, a studio or the far end of a long home, we can add mesh WiFi or a point to point link running from the same Starlink service.
The result
A neat, secure installation giving the household fast, reliable internet for streaming, work and everyday use, without the dropouts.
