A shack that deserved better connectivity
Verona Sands sits on the D’Entrecasteaux Channel across the water from Bruny Island, one of those quiet pockets of the Huon Valley where the bush comes right down to the shacks and the mobile signal thins out fast once you’re under the canopy. This property had never had a proper internet connection, just a patchy mobile signal that came and went depending on where you stood in the yard. The owners had started spending more time there, splitting their week between Hobart and the Channel, and being unable to get online reliably had gone from a minor inconvenience to something actually limiting how much time they could spend at the shack.
Why Starlink suited a block like this
With no fixed line anywhere near Verona Sands and mobile coverage unreliable this deep into the bush, Starlink was the obvious fit. It doesn’t need copper, fibre or a nearby tower, just a clear line of sight to the sky, which made it a far more practical option than waiting on infrastructure that was never likely to reach this far down the Channel.
Rising above the stringybark and blue gum
The block is ringed with tall stringybark and blue gum forest, more than enough to block a dish mounted low or flush to the roof. We installed a freestanding tripod mast, guyed for stability and anchored to the shed roof, lifting the dish well above the surrounding tree line so it has a clean, unobstructed path to the satellites overhead rather than dropping out every time the canopy sways.
The result
Fast, stable internet where there was none before, and a mast solid enough to handle the wind and weather that comes with an exposed position like this one. What was a weekends-only shack can now genuinely double as a base to work from.
