This installation covers a new UHF digital TV antenna at a waterfront home in South Arm, on the peninsula south east of Hobart.
Why South Arm reception can be tricky
South Arm sits out on its own peninsula, with water on most sides and hills between it and the main Hobart transmission site. Depending on where a home sits, the best signal can come from a different direction or a different frequency band than it does just a few streets away. That’s why there’s no single “right” antenna for the whole area, and why copying what the neighbours have doesn’t always work.
The only reliable way to know is to test the signal at the property itself before choosing the antenna.

What we did
After testing the available signal on site, we installed a UHF antenna on a galvanised mast with a heavy duty roof bracket, fixed through the roofing into the structure. The antenna was aimed using a signal meter and locked in once we had the strongest and cleanest reading across all channels. Being right on the water, the mast and fixings were chosen to cope with salt air and wind.
The coaxial cable was looped and clipped neatly down the mast to stop water tracking into the connection, then run into the roof space. Every connection was checked and sealed.
Testing before choosing the antenna also saves money. It avoids the common situation where an antenna goes up, doesn’t work as well as hoped, and then has to be swapped for a different type later on.
The result
Clear, reliable free-to-air TV for the household, from an antenna matched to the signal that actually reaches their spot on the peninsula.
