Flat country, a long way from the transmitter
Oatlands sits out in the Southern Midlands, roughly halfway between Hobart and Launceston, where reception problems usually come down to plain distance rather than anything blocking the roof. There was no hill or tree line in the way here, just open paddocks running out toward the horizon in every direction, but that same distance meant the signal had a long way to travel before it reached this property. The old antenna was only ever pulling in just enough for a watchable picture, and not always that.
Why this job needed more gain, not less obstruction
A standard antenna built for a suburban Hobart distance was never going to cut it out here. Instead for this antenna installation we fitted a higher-gain Yagi, built to pull in a usable signal across a distance most metro jobs never have to deal with, rather than something suited to a much shorter run into town.
Getting the aim right over a long path
We mounted the antenna on a freestanding tripod mast beside the chimney, guyed for stability against the open midlands wind, and took extra care with the aim. Over a shorter suburban run a slightly off angle barely matters, but across a path this long even a small misalignment can be the difference between a clean picture and one that keeps dropping.
The result
A sharp, reliable digital picture that finally makes the most of what the signal has to offer this far from the transmitter, instead of scraping by on the last few bars of a marginal connection.
